About
A “Sound Creature” is a sound that evokes a living being, a creature drawing brought to life through audio. Some sounds are based on real animals; others are entirely invented. Each one is deliberately open to interpretation: you hear something alive in the recording and imagine what it might look like and do, based on its vocalisations and movement sounds. I started the project in 2011 by sending these sounds to a selection of visual artists and animators, who each created an artwork based on what they heard. Later on, I hosted live drawing sessions where audiences equipped with pen and paper drew their own creatures while listening.
Curated Sound Creatures
For the first version of the project, I sent some of my favorite visual artists, illustrators, and animators a unique Sound Creature recording, and each of them created an artwork inspired by what they heard.

Sound Creature Drawing Sessions
In 2012, I turned Sound Creatures into a live drawing session at Pictoplasma, the wonderful Berlin-based character design festival. I scanned every drawing made by the audience — a talented mix of artists, illustrators, and even children — and compiled them into a dedicated gallery. The session returned in 2013 at Platoon Kunsthalle, resulting in over 900 drawings.
TATE Kids
Using the original sounds and concept, TATE hosted interactive Sound Creature drawing sessions in which children listened to the sounds and drew their own creatures.
